This trial is enrolling individuals with chronic spinal cord injuries to test the effect of trunk training combined with functional electrical stimulation (FES) on sitting balance and functional independence. FES is a technique that applies electrical stimulation through the skin to nerves to cause contraction of weakened or paralyzed muscles. Here, FES is applied to muscles involved in sitting balance. If included, participants will undergo a 12-week training. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two study groups: either receiving the trunk task-oriented training; or receiving the training in combination with FES. Final testing, including sitting function, reaching and balance function, functional independence, and quality of life, will be performed 1 month after the 12-week intervention.
Type
Details
Participants will be randomly assigned to one of two study arms: 1. 12 weeks of trunk task-oriented training (3 times a week) combined WITH trunk muscle functional electrical stimulation (FES) 2. 12 weeks of trunk task-oriented training (3 times a week) WITHOUT trunk muscle functional electrical stimulation (FES) -Outcome assessments starting at baseline and ending 1 month after the intervention
Main benefits
Standing/walking/mobility
Additional benefits
Good to know: Potential benefits are defined as outcomes that are being measured during and/or after the trial.
