About this trial

This trial is enrolling individuals with recent incomplete spinal cord injuries to assess the effect of assisted cycling on lower extremity function. Cycling movements will be assisted by functional electrical stimulation (FES), a technique that applies electrical current through the skin to nerves, causing contraction of weakened or paralyzed muscles. Participants will cycle from their wheelchair coupled to a motorized ergometer (RT300 FES cycle) with feet and lower legs strapped to the pedals. The study will measure changes in walking function, trunk balance, and ability to undertake activities of daily living. If included in the study, participants will be randomly assigned to one of two study groups, either the intervention group (performing FES cycling 3 times per week for 6 weeks, each session lasting up to 90 minutes); or the control group (receiving standard physical therapy and rehabilitation for 6 weeks, 2 times per day, 4 to 5 days per week, each lasting approximately 90 minutes).
